There’s quite an interesting story behind the hotel’s origins. The family-run hotel was built by the hotel owner and manager, Siggi, two years ago. He and his wife were slowly renovating an abandoned farm next to the hotel. Soon, the family realized that they wanted others to enjoy the same peace and quiet of this area. Therefore, in 2015, they started working on designing and building UMI Hotel. Thereafter, Siggi’s daughter, Sandra – who is an interior and lighting designer – took it on herself to design the hotel. The aim of her design was to create a welcoming and calming environment for the guests where they could relax after a busy day of exploring. The inspiration for materials and the color pallet of the hotel is drawn from the surrounding nature, the beautiful colors of the Icelandic autumn, and shapes and textures from the Icelandic nature.

Getting Around

There are a bunch of activities that you can indulge in, around the hotel. You can just walk outside the hotel to see the stunning Northern Lights. Such similar arrangements can be made by the hotel staff, on request. Events such as a Christmas dinner/party, etc. are also organized. If you wish to host an event of your own for your guests, arrangements for the same can be made as well.

The hotel is only about 150-kilometers away from Reykjavik, the country’s capital, which is home to the National and Saga Museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. Other points of attractions include the striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja Church and Perlan Glass Dome, which offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. The hotel is also about 2-kilometers away from the  Ring Road. There’s nothing like a good road trip and Ring Road offers just that kind of experience.

The starlit skies and Northern Lights certainly won’t let anyone down, especially during the winter months. Other regional attractions include Eyjafjallajökul, Skógarfoss, Skógar Cultural Heritage Museum, Seljalandsfoss, Dyrhólaey, Sólheimajökul, Vík í Mýrdal, Lava Volcano and Earthquake exhibition and many more.
