Santarem is a district located in Central Portugal and home to the beautiful riverside town of Santarem also known as Portugal’s Gothic capital. The old centre of is full of history, attractive architecture, monasteries and churches. As a lesser visited town, it’s never too crowded and perfect for a summer break.

If you’re in town for only a day we recommend a guided walking tour just to make sure you hit up all the local sights. If a tour isn’t your thing then don’t leave without at least exploring the Jardim das Portas do sol and the Santa Maria de Alcacova church.

Given it’s location by the river, the town is the perfect place to go on a boat trip. Boat trip are a great family friendly activity, where one can enjoy stunning views of the Tagus river, the natural landscape and local wildlife. Indeed, the area attracts bird watchers and photography enthusiasts.
