Bulgaria is an increasingly popular tourist destination. In recent years with the advent of cheap flights it’s become more accessible especially to Western European countries. It’s a much cheaper and unique alternative to the usual tired European holiday destinations. Visitors can expect amazing mountain ranges, lovely sandy beaches, vibrant cities, quaint villages, historical monuments and great cuisine.

For first timers we’ve put together a list of top five things to see and do.

Relax at the Beach

During communist times Bulgarian beaches had a great reputation, mainly among travellers from behind the iron curtain. Today this reputation has continued, sandy sun-kissed beach towns like Sozopol, Golden Sands and Sunny beach are good enough to compete with anywhere in Europe.

Hike in the Mountains

This a must do activity in Bulgaria, the country is home to varied mountain ranges and the trails are relatively well signed. There are number of different routes, we recommend the hike to the seven Rila lakes and the Malyovitsa peak.

Night Out in Sofia

Sofia is the vibrant capital of Bulgaria and an ever-increasing night life hub. There are a diverse range of bars and the licensing laws make it possible for them to remain open all night meaning you can party until dawn.

Explore Ancient Nessebar

A coastal town and UNESCO world heritage site, Nessebar is home to a number of ancient churches, cobbled streets, an archaeological museum, old fortifications and a distinctive windmill that marks the entrance.

Rila Monastery Nature Park

A great place to tick off two of the best things to do in Bulgaria. The first is the chance to see the idyllic natural landscape and mountains. Second nestled amongst the mountain is the beautiful Rila Monastery, a UNESCO world heritage site.
