Biysk isn’t easy to reach, there are no flights and the train from Moscow takes two days. But if you can make it to this Western Siberian town then you’re in for a treat as it’s the gateway to the stunning Altay mountain range.

The Altai Mountain range and the surrounding area is picturesque, known as Russia’s answer to the Alps. You’ll find forests, lakes, nature reserves to explore and private campsites to stay in. It’s a paradise for hikers, climbers, wildlife lovers and photography enthusiasts.

The town of Biysk itself shouldn’t be overlooked as a simple gateway to another region. It has much to offer and the old town is a delight. The Cathedral of Assumption and the Chuiskiy Trakt Museum are both worth a visit.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, we recommend Travel and Hospitality Award winner the Prague Hotel profiled on the next page.
